From Warrior (Letter 8) - Grit's Death

Warrior - Serving fourteen years for kidnapping and aggravated assault. Half Hispanic and Scottish-Irish with family still in Mexico. Brought up by a family steeped in drug commerce. He writes some of the best prison-fight stories on the Internet.

This week’s been totally insane. One of my neighbors, Grit, bit the big one and OD’d on Monday. It took staff about 20 minutes to respond, another 15 to get the paramedics, by the time they came ol’ boy was done. His body was left on display for about 6 hours on the tier before they cleared him out. What a way to go. I don’t think anyone gets used to seeing a dead body, we just learn to tolerate the reality and appreciate life, for me at least. The warden asked the sergeant on duty what their response time was. He said 5 minutes. Word on the yard was that Grit was doing a grip of time. He beat the system, and went out like a straight gangsta. Life’s a trip.

I only worked out with Grit for a short time, as he was released, and I became Iron Man's next workout partner. Grit was supposed to move in with his wife who he believed would help him quit drugs, but at the last minute the prison reassigned him to a halfway house infested with drugs in a rough part of Phoenix, and Grit knew he was heading for trouble. I believe deep down he wanted to do well, but his addiction got the best of him. I don't even know if Irom Man is aware of this, but I'm about to break the news to him.

The idea put forth by Warrior that Plug went out as some type of gangster/hero is nonsense. Plug had a very serious, life-threatening disease known as addiction. Ultimately this sickness, which went untreated in ADOC, cost Plug his life.
Rest in peace my friend.

For my Friend and Brother Carl "Plug" Cresong: May the Lord bless thee and keep thee, may the Lord turn His Countenance toward thee, and may the Lord shine His Light upon thee and give thee peace.
Love and Respect,
Iron Man.
